SRD 5.2.1 table guides / Conditions

Incapacitated: actions, speech and concentration

Incapacitated is often included inside another condition. Resolve its complete list even when the visible label on the character is Stunned, Paralyzed or Unconscious.

Use it at the table

  1. Remove access to actions, Bonus Actions and Reactions.
  2. End Concentration and note that the creature cannot speak.
  3. If Initiative is rolled while the condition is active, apply Disadvantage. Check the originating condition for any additional limits.

Make the call

A caster becomes Incapacitated while concentrating on a spell. Can they retain Concentration and spend a Reaction later in the round?

Watch for this mistake

Incapacitated alone does not list Speed zero, automatic failed saves or automatic critical hits. Those may come from another condition. Keeping the lists distinct prevents extra penalties from being added accidentally.

Ask the table

Which ongoing concentration effect ends now, and does another condition add movement or save restrictions?

The source rule

SRD 5.2.1, page 184. Read the official PDF.

While you have the Incapacitated condition, you experience the following effects. Inactive. You can’t take any action, Bonus Action, or Reaction. No Concentration. Your Concentration is broken. Speechless. You can’t speak. Surprised. If you’re Incapacitated when you roll Initiative, you have Disadvantage on the roll.
